Beda (Terminalia belerica) is a large deciduous tree. Fruit of this tree is used for various purposes. Major Chemical constituents are Triterpenoids: Belleric acid, the glycoside saponin bellericoside and bellericanin, and sterols such as ß-Sitosterol have been isolated from the fruit.
Polyphenols: Phyllembin, ellagic acid, gallic acid, ethyl gallate, chebulagic acid and hexahydroxydiphenic acid ester3, 4 are present. Fixed Oil: A fixed oil is extracted from the seed. Baheda fruit is used in Ayurvedic and Unani systems of medicine for stomach disorders, insomnia, high blood pressure, headache, diabetes, ulcer, etc. Its paste when applied on eyelids, acts as a soothing lotion. Its preparations are also used in piles, leprosy, dropsy and fever. Half-ripe Baheda fruit acts as a purgative while the ripe and dried one has the opposite effect. It is also used in Oxalic acid and preparation if ink. Behada Fruit is a fruit from Indian that has a high level of tannins. Behada Fruit helps to support a healthy colon.
